Rural Art Revival™: A First-Year Gathering with Country Soul

Why Michel Keck is bringing a new juried art gathering to Wheatfield, Indiana, October 1–3, 2027, as part of October Market Trails.

Black-and-white portrait of contemporary abstract artist Michel Keck in her Northwest Indiana art studio, surrounded by canvases, paint supplies, shelves, and layered artwork.

There is something about meeting an artist in person that changes the way you see the work. You can ask about a rough edge, a strange material, or the first mark. You can hear the story in the artist’s own words. And sometimes, in the middle of an ordinary conversation, you find the piece you want to take home.

That kind of connection is at the heart of Rural Art Revival™, a new, small juried art event coming to Michel Keck Studio & Gallery at 5538 West 1450 North, Wheatfield, Indiana 46392, on October 1, 2, and 3, 2027. It is our first year, and the invitation is simple: come spend some time with original art and the people who make it.

A country gathering, sparked by a collector’s love of art

The idea came from Michel Keck. Events such as Minnie Adkins Day in the Country and Finster Fest helped spark her desire to bring that rural art life to Northwest Indiana: a place to discover independent artists, talk about the work, and enjoy the surroundings along the way.

Michel knows art from both sides of that conversation. She is a mixed-media artist, but she is also an art collector who has supported artists worldwide by collecting their work. Her interest in original voices extends well beyond what happens in her own studio.

Rural Art Revival™ is a way to share that love. The “revival” is about renewing the connection between artists and the people who appreciate them, with room for raw, self-taught expression and work shaped by formal study.

Small, juried, and open to different paths

The jurors for the inaugural event are mixed-media artist Michel Keck, fiber artist Kristi Yapp, and Bonnie Zimmer, a fiber artist inspired by nature. Both self-taught and formally trained artists are part of the event’s vision.

For visitors, a smaller gathering offers the chance to slow down. Look at the materials. Ask how a piece was made. Spend time with artist demonstrations, and see how an idea takes shape through someone else’s hands. You do not have to be an experienced collector to start that conversation.

Art, music, and a few good pantry finds

Original art and fine art prints are at the center of the weekend, alongside outlaw country and bluegrass music, food trucks, and a wine tent. There is room to browse, take a break, eat something good, and come back for another look.

The handmade spirit extends to artisan products, including handmade skin care and jams, jellies, hot sauces, and canned goods from Indiana farmers. It is a chance to support the people whose skill goes into the things you hang on your wall, use in your home, or set on the table.

Details about the artists, music, and food will be shared as the first-year lineup comes together. For now, save the weekend and bring your curiosity.

An event within an event

Rural Art Revival™ is also part of something bigger. Michel Keck Studio & Gallery is one of the 11 home stops on October Market Trails, where each stop brings its own personality and specialties to the weekend.

Across the trail, visitors can find artisan goods, boutique items, antiques, paintings, ceramics, wood products, furniture, and more. All the stops work together to promote artisans and small Indiana business owners. The result is a country weekend with plenty of reasons to keep exploring.

At the Michel Keck Studio & Gallery stop, Rural Art Revival™ gives that journey its art gathering: artists on site, work to discover, music, and handmade goods. Visit us, then wander on to another home stop. Make room for the unexpected find.

Plan for Friday or Saturday to meet every artist

Friday, October 1, and Saturday, October 2, run from 9 AM to 4 PM, with all participating artists on site. If your goal is to see every artist, choose one of those days.

Sunday, October 3, runs from 11 AM to 4 PM. Michel Keck Studio & Gallery will be open for the full Sunday event day, but visiting artists decide individually whether to remain on the grounds. Sunday offers another chance to visit the gallery and any artists who stay, with a lineup that can differ from Friday and Saturday. All hours are Central Time.
